Active vs resting calories on Apple Watch

Last updated

Active energy is the calorie burn that comes from movement above your resting rate, and resting energy is what your body spends just staying alive. Your Move ring shows only part of what you burn. Here is what active and resting energy mean in Apple Health, how to see your total, and why the total is the number that matters for eating.

What is the difference between active and resting calories?

Resting energy is what your body burns staying alive, and active energy is everything above that, from walking to workouts. Apple Health records calories in two separate fields all day.

Total calories burned for the day is simply the two added together. A 500 kcal Move ring on a 1,700 kcal resting day is a 2,200 kcal total.

Why does the Move ring read low?

Because it shows only active energy, not your resting burn. The Fitness app is built around activity, so it headlines active energy and buries resting energy in Health under Browse, Activity, Resting Energy. People compare a 480 kcal Move total to a TDEE calculator saying 2,400 and assume the Watch is broken. It is not. They are looking at half the number.

How do you see your total calories burned?

Add Resting Energy and Active Energy in the Health app, or use an app that adds them for you.

  1. Open the Health app, tap Browse, then Activity. Resting Energy and Active Energy are separate rows; add them for today.
  2. Or use an app that does the addition and keeps the history. Total Calories shows the combined number on your iPhone, as an Apple Watch complication and in a home or lock screen widget, with the active and resting split underneath.

How accurate are Apple Watch calories?

Apple Watch active energy is typically within 10 to 20% for walking and running, and less reliable for cycling, strength work and anything that keeps your wrist still. Independent tests put it among the better wrist trackers. Resting energy is a formula, so it carries the same limits as any BMR calculator. The daily total is still far closer to your real burn than a static TDEE estimate, because it includes what you actually did.

How do you make your calorie total more useful?

Keep your weight current, wear the Watch all day, and use a 7-day average.

Informational only, not medical advice.

Common questions

Does Apple Watch count resting calories?

Yes. Resting energy is recorded in Apple Health all day, but the Fitness app's Move ring only shows active energy. Add the two for your total burn.

Why does my Apple Watch say I burned only 400 calories?

That is the active half. Your resting energy, usually 1,200 to 2,000 kcal, is tracked separately in the Health app. Your real daily total is the sum.

Can I see total calories burned on my Apple Watch face?

Not with Apple's built-in complications, which show the Move ring only. Total Calories adds a complication and widgets that show active plus resting energy as one number.

Should you go by active calories or total calories?

Go by total calories, active plus resting, when you decide how much to eat, because that is your whole burn for the day. Active calories (the Move ring) make a good activity goal, but on their own they leave out the 1,200 to 2,000 kcal your body spends at rest. Average the total over 7 or more days, since any single day is noisy.

How accurate is Apple Watch resting energy?

It is a formula estimate, not a measurement. The Watch calculates resting energy from the height, weight, age and sex in your Health profile, so it carries the same limits as any BMR calculator. Keep your weight current in Health, because resting energy is computed from it.
